For Maximum Home Security, Don’t Forget Fire Safety June 12, 2010

When taking measures to protect themselves and their homes, some people focus solely on security alarms and ant-theft precautions, and they completely skip over one of the biggest home security issues of all. That is, fire safety. Suffering a house fire is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a household. Not only the physical, but also the psychological damage that follows can be – depending on the severity of the fire – nearly impossible to overcome. That is why it is extremely important to take preventive measures.

To increase your home security by improving fire safety, you will want to start by assessing your house and identifying everything that might be a potential fire hazard. Once you have identified the potential risks you can figure out best to lessen them.

There are a lot of common sense safety practices that you should follow to ensure the safety of all the people living in your home. For example, you will want to make sure you have working smoke detectors installed throughout your home (at least one per floor) and hooked up to your home alarm system. All smoke detectors should be tested regularly (once every month or two, at least), and the batteries should be checked and changed about one time per year.

On top of the smoke detectors, you should also put together an escape plan for each person living in your house and review it with everyone. Choose a spot outside the house that can be your “safe place,” where everyone should meet in case of an emergency. In the event of a fire, things can get pretty chaotic, so it is best to have a pre-designated place to meet once everyone is out of harm’s way. Conduct a fire drill so everyone gets comfortable with getting out of the house and meeting in your safe place in as little time as possible.

Personal safety is of course the most important concern when dealing with a house fire. However, you will also want to do everything you can to protect any valuable, irreplaceable – or at least very-hard-to-replace – belongings you might have in your possession. These items can include anything from birth certificates, to social security cards, to medical records and insurance policy information, to family photographs and home videos. Losing important things like this can cause a lot of emotional trauma, and can be really problematic to replace. The best way to protect such items is by locking them in a fireproof safe (this helps protect them from burglary, as well).

For maximum home security and fire safety, you will want to enlist the help of a professional security company for back up. Choose a security company that provides home security systems with 24-hour monitoring services. With these services, someone is always watching over you. If your smoke detector sets off your alarm, an automatic signal will be sent to the monitoring service, and they will send the fire department to your home right away.
